Sword & Shield / Rapier PvP Build

Season 1

A nasty, light armor, backstabbing assassin build with great mobility. This build does a great job hunting down targets and stunning / staggering them to death.

Hope you enjoy the build!

Check out a video guide with gameplay for this build!

50 STR - Great for the base sword damage scaling and the 50 jump point gives Rapier’s main source of damage (light attacks) a hearty 10% boost!

250 DEX - This build benefits from all the DEX passives it has access to, as well as both weapons scaling from DEX.

50 INT - Gives rapier a bit of a damage boost and adds 10% more crit damage, you can put these points into DEX if you prefer!

150 CON - I prefer to run 150 CON in light as the critical damage reduction is huge for taking hits, and this build is a melee light armor fighter. You can always go higher or lower depending on how much bulk you want to have in exchange for damage!

Strength

  • 50: +10% damage to melee physical basic attacks. +10% mining speed

Dexterity

  • 100: +5% thrust damage. +20% haste for 3s after skinning.

  • 150: Dodges cost 10 less stamina. -10% decrease in weight of skinned items.

  • 200: +10% bonus backstab and headshot damage. +10% skinning speed

  • 250: +10% bonus to random critical hit damage against stunned, slowed, or rooted enemies. +10% yield increase when skinning

  • 150: -10% to critical damage taken. -10% decrease in weight of logging items.

Equipment

The ideal Rapier for this build would be Rogue, Lightning Attunement, Keenly Jagged. Not only would this Rapier be great for damage dealing, but all the extra DOTs from its attacks play a huge roll in your stamina sustain thanks to the Controlled Breathing Rapier passive.

Show’s Edge is a fantastic sword for this build, but my dream weapon would have Empowered Leaping strike instead of Rogue!

Accelerating Resolve and Sturdy are the must haves for the shield, with your 3rd perk being a missing offensive perk that the sword doesn’t have (Don’t double up on Keenly Empowered like me, it doesn’t stack)!

Both weapons are fitted with Gambit gems, with the Rapier having the added Lightning DOT from the Runeglass for even more sustain. The sword ideally would have a Nature or Arcane DOT as well!

This patch the BIS armor perks for PvP would be Elemental Aversion, Resilient, Freedom. You definitely DONT want to run shirking fortification in light armor this patch if you can help it! As always I like to have Shirking energy on my legs for the stamina sustain.

Omnidirectional Evade would also be a nice perk to have on your weapon or armor!

All the armor pieces should ideally have Energizing or Punishing Runeglass gems, depending on if you want more stamina sustain or damage.

Health, Stamina Recovery and Shirking Empower are basically the best necklace perks for a damage build, but Divine is also a good choice too! The Ring ideally would be Thrust Damage, Hearty, and Invigorated Punishment / Keen Awareness. As always Refreshing Toast and Healthy Toast are must haves on your earing!

The Cannon Blast Heartrune is a nice surprise option as opponents don’t expect you to have a ranged attack, however this build would benefit immensely from Stoneform.

Since Elemental Aversion will reduce most elemental damage attacks that players use, this build focuses on reducing Thrust damage. Thrust Damage is the most common damage type in PvP, especially because of those bows!!

You will need food to reach the jump points that this build requires, and don’t be shy to use a honing stone too! Remember to use both Health, Mana, and Regeneration Potions in PvP! Both the Oakflesh Balm and Gemstone Dust are great consumables to have slotted incase you need a bunch of extra resists.

Active Skills

Rapier

Flourish And Finish - 3/5 Upgrades

Access to grit, a very fast AOE stagger, and a powerful follow up attack all in one. This skill is excellent for closing out a kill on an opponent while also offering a ton of defensive utility. I only take the first 3 upgrades here due to not running any of the rapier bleeds on this setup.

Evade - 5/5 Upgrades

Evade is arguably the Rapier’s best skill. It not only allows you to have a brief moment of invulnerability, but makes you more mobile, can be used to attack, and can cancel any ability or action! This is a very unique effect and gives the Rapier a high skill ceiling for PvP combat. Omnidirectional Evade can make this skill stack even more damage on your next attack too!

Fleche - 4/4 Upgrades

This is not only an amazing gap-closer for attacking and getting away, but it is also a quick way for you to get behind an opponent and hit them with a strong backstab. This is also a very fast skill to cast and does quite a bit of damage on the initial hit too!

Sword & Shield

Shield Bash - 3/3 Upgrades

A long duration stun with a rather quick wind up time that is perfect for setting up your backstab combo’s. This ability is also a great defensive choice if you want to stop someone from attacking you!

Defender’s Resolve - 3/3 Upgrades

A fantastic tanking ability that makes you very durable, and thanks to the Accelerated Resolve perk on the shield it even gives you a 32% Haste boost! This ability is perfect for getting out of a bad situation, or preparing yourself to jump into the middle of a fight!

Leaping Strike - 3/3 Upgrades

A fast gap closer that can also stagger your target allowing you to land a quick follow up light attack. Can be used to pursue or escape from enemies.
